What is a Dental Exam and Cleaning?
A dental cleaning and exam will help to keep your teeth, gums, and mouth healthy. We recommend being seen for routine preventative care every six months. For children, it’s important that they have their first dental appointment as soon as you notice their baby teeth beginning to develop. Cleanings and exams are an integral part of your overall dental health, and can prevent problems from starting or getting worse.
Why do you need routine Exams and Cleanings?
A routine dental exam checks for signs of decay as well as issues with restorations like bridges, crowns, veneers, and fillings. Your exam includes a complete oral cancer screening. The cleaning involves removing hardened plaque and built-up tartar from the teeth, which is impossible to remove on your own. The hygienist performing your cleaning will also check your gums for signs of gingivitis and gum disease.

What can you expect during a Dental Exam and Cleaning?
You will first be seen by the hygienist, who will take x-rays of your teeth. The hygienist will then measure your gum pockets (the areas around your teeth) to check for signs of gingivitis and gum disease. They will then perform a professional dental cleaning that involves using various tools to effectively remove buildup. Once the cleaning is complete, the doctor will come in and perform the examination. During this exam, the doctor will check for signs of decay and other apparent intraoral issues. If anything is found, a treatment plan is created for you, and you will be scheduled to have any additional work done.
