Orthodontic Treatment in Patients with Diabetes

In relation to the treatment of Orthodontics, in particular, one of the systemic problems to be especially taken into account, both in children and adults, is diabetes or prediabetic state.

When in doubt of patients with diabetes about whether they can follow an orthodontic treatment, the answer is that if diabetes is adequately controlled, the periodontal response to orthodontic forces is practically normal and a satisfactory result can be obtained.

However, if diabetes is not well controlled, there is a risk that the periodontal degradation will accelerate, which is why it is essential that the diabetic patient follow his medical treatment during all phases of orthodontic treatment.

Regular dental check-up

We recall the special importance of periodic dental check-ups, as they contribute not only to controlling the periodontal disease of people with diagnosed diabetes, but also to early detection of the development of diabetes in the presence of problems in the patient’s gums.

To perform dental or orthodontic treatment, we must keep in mind that patients with diabetes have a higher risk of complications and oral health problems. The worse the blood sugar level is controlled, the more problems the patient will have. Poorly controlled diabetes not only affects the body’s defense capacity against infections that may appear in the mouth, but also the ability to reshape bone when performing dental movements in orthodontics. Dental problems are common in diabetic patients, so special attention should be paid to the accumulation of bacterial plaque and wounds to avoid possible complications during treatment. It is important to realize that these types of problems can be avoided or decreased when the patient is under medical control, The general dentist and orthodontist must keep in constant communication with the endocrinologist when they are treating patients with Diabetes, they also have the responsibility of educating diabetic patients under their care and insisting that they regularly attend appointments medical control.
